Promotion Toyota is committed to raising awareness of environmental issues and more sustainable choices and we take every opportunity to share our ‘sustainable mobility’ vision.
We have been publishing information on our environmental activities in NZ since 2003 through our website, news releases and, in 2005, with our first Sustainability Report.
Our executive and environmental staff speak regularly at industry and public events, and we sponsor a number of partnerships to broaden our commitment.
We regularly open the doors to our National Customer Centre in Palmerston North and Signature Class Used Vehicle plant in Thames, to the public and other businesses who are interested in learning about our operational and environmental practices.
EmployeesTNZ’s corporate philosophy encourages problem solving and continuous improvement. Employees are encouraged to take responsibility for their impact on the environment.
New employees receive an induction pack which includes a summary of TNZ’s responsibility and commitment to the environment.
Throughout the year we raise awareness of environmental issues to staff in our internal newsletter and regular e-newsletter which provides environmental news and ideas.
A key event on our calendar is ‘Toyota Environment Month’ in June, when we make an extra effort to step up our individual and company commitment at work or home. Highlights of Environment Month activity include:
- the collection of old computers and mobile phones for recycling
- staff car pooling
- local school poster competitions
- home energy saving advice
- fuel saving driving tips
- staff giveaways of energy efficient lightbulbs
- staff giveaways of ‘Ecostore’ products.
Business Partners – Responsible PurchasingToyota works to contribute to the wider sustainable development of society through co-operation with business partners. One way we can do this is through our business purchases.
Purchasing choices are often governed by habit and familiarity, but increasing numbers of consumers and businesses are consciously using their purchasing power to ‘reward’ better business practice and ‘punish’ companies with poor or ambivalent efforts towards the environment and society, by not purchasing their goods.
This is the philosophy behind our Responsible Purchasing Policy encourages our suppliers to minimise their environmental impact. We have integrated environmental criteria into our supplier contracts, together with our traditional expectations of good quality and service.
By making positive purchasing choices we can help encourage more sustainable products and business practice, and reduce our overall impact.
We continue to purchase more sustainable products including fair trade coffee, organic milk, carpet tiles made from recycled materials, ‘Environmental Choice’ paints, environmentally accredited office furniture and chairs, recycled ECF paper, recycled paper hand towels and toilet paper, eco store and Ecolab cleaning solutions.
CustomersWe share our knowledge and experience at regular customer workshops to help other NZ companies along the path to sustainability.
