Future Technology

Toyota’s aim is to one day build the ultimate eco-car, a car which will have no negative impact on the environment or society – from either the fuel which powers it or the materials from which it is made.

Today’s cars produce a range of exhaust pollutants these can be eliminated by develop cars which run on fossil free fuel. Hydrogen fuel cells (which create electricity and emit only water) are widely believed to be the power source of the future. However, currently on-board storage of sufficient hydrogen to power a car long distances is a problem and fuel efficiency will be very important to their range and market acceptability.

Existing hybrid technology is able to make all fuel sources go further. It is therefore relevant both today in maximising the mileage from petrol and diesel vehicles as well as providing a big step towards the cars of the future, powered by hydrogen.

Toyota is investing in a range of prototype hydrogen vehicles and also developing other future concept vehicles. These were on display during the 2005 EXPO in Japan, such as the ‘i-unit’, next-generation urban transport systems and fuel cell hybrid buses.
